Born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Maitreyi identifies as 'Tamil-Canadian' rather than 'Sri Lankan’. She began acting in school plays in Grade 10 and graduated from Meadowvale Secondary School. She made the decision to pursue an acting career in her last year at Meadowvale and landed the lead role of “Devi Vishwakumar” in the Netflix teen comedy series Never Have I Ever less than a year after. Ramakrishnan deferred her acceptance to the theatre program at York University in Toronto, which she had initially planned to attend the fall after she graduated high school, so she could shoot the series in Los Angeles. Janette caught up with her a Liquid Media’s Tiff party to discuss the series which first aired in July 2020 was renewed by Netflix for a second season August 2021 and deals with the coming-of-age of an Indian-American high school student coping with the sudden death of her father. This is Ramakrishnan’s first-ever acting role. She was selected by the show’s creator, Mindy Kalin (whose life the show is loosely based-on), out of 15,000 applicants who applied in an open casting call. Never Have I Ever has been described as a watershed moment for South Asian representation in Hollywood and has received praise for breaking South Asian stereotypes. A third season is in the making.
