It is based on Julia Quinn's novels set in the competitive world of Regency era London's ton during the season, when debutantes are presented at court. Stories of wealth, lust, and betrayal are told through the eyes of the powerful Bridgerton family. The main story focuses on the two leading characters Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest Bridgerton daughter, played by British actress Phoebe Dynevor and Simon Basset, The Duke of Hastings, played by British actor, Rege-Jean Page.
Bridgerton premiered on Netflix on December 25, 2020. The nine-episode first season was met with positive reviews. With a viewership of 98 million households, it has become the most-watched series on Netflix. In January 2021, the series was renewed for a second season.
